The Montclair Art Museum is a notable community organization with an international reputation. It is still located in the same, although now thrice-expanded, building which opened in 1914. Nestled amid a gorgeous, tree-lined residential site in Montclair, New Jersey, the museum is lauded for its performances of American and Native American Art, its exhibition programs and educational offerings.

The museum was a pioneer: one of the first museums in the United States mainly engaged in collecting American art that includes the works of contemporary, non-academic artists and among the first dedicated to the study and creation of an important ethnographic art collection. This pioneering passion still echoes in the museum?s presentation and pursuit of top-quality art that celebrates and characterizes the diversity of America. The collection has grown to more than 12,000 works. The American collection, which started off with a gift of 30 paintings from William T. Evans, a Montclair civic leader, is composed of drawings, paintings, photographs, prints and sculpture that date back to the 18th century up to the present.

The Montclair Art Museum features superb works by Asher B. Durand, George Inness, Benjamin West, Edward Hopper, John Singer Sargent, Andy Warhol, Georgia O?Keeffe, and Roy Lichtenstein, as well as budding and younger artists such as Chakaia Booker, Whitfield Lovell, Louise Lawler, and Willie Cole. The museum?s excellent holdings of contemporary and traditional American Indian art and artifacts represent the cultural success in pottery, wood carving, weaving, textiles and jewelry of indigenous Americans from seven major regions - California, Southwest, Northwest Coast, Woodlands, Plains, Arctic and the Southeast.

The wide-ranging extensive educational programs of the museum serve a large public and, often in collaboration with community and cultural partners, bring performers, scholars and artists to the museum on a regular basis. MAM?s Yard School of Art is the leading regional art institution that offers a multitude of comprehensive classes for adults, seniors, professional artists, teens and kids.

Accredited by the American Association of Museums, the Montclair Art Museum welcomes more than 65,000 visitors to its acclaimed programs and exhibitions annually.
