The Two River Theater Company produces contemporary plays, classics and innovative teaching programs in a cutting-edge theater complex that was launched in 2005. Founded in 1994 by Joan and Dr. Robert M. Rechnitz, the organization?s first three seasons were produced at Monmouth University where Dr. Rechnitz was a professor of American Literature.
A non-profit theater firm, Two River Theater received immediate popular and critical praise and rose to stardom. It became a full member of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance after just one year as an affiliate member?the first time in the Alliance?s history that a theater was given full membership. In 1996, an editorial in the Asbury Park Press lauded the institution and its service to Monmouth County.
Two River Theater serves multi-generational audiences with wide-ranging community and educational shows. The theater?s personnel and teaching artists train young people and students in classrooms and through distinct programs that encourage them to discover their innate creativity, take risks, and build their confidence. On top of student matinees, Two River offers many opportunities for students to build and act on their own original plays.
The theater launched a five-year collaborative relationship in 2005 with New Jersey?s Monmouth University. Through this partnership, hundreds of teachers and thousands of students have attended Two River shows; the firm?s productions have been bonded into academic curricula and panel discussions and guest lectures have been incorporated both at the campus and on theater.
As the theater grew, so did its audiences; patrons attended Two River from Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex, and Somerset counties. After two years of construction, Two River opened a new theater in Red Bank. The two-theater complex offers both top of the line technical amenities and an exclusive play-going experience for its audiences.
Today, Two River Theater Company is dedicated to develop new work and talents, producing the classics in dynamic and powerful re-makings, and giving outreach programs that nourish curiosity and creativity. In its productions and through its community involvement, Two River is a venue where artists can engage in serious dialogue with committed and passionate audiences.
