As iconic as the business tycoon who owns it, the Trump Tower situated on Fifth Avenue in close proximity to 56th street perfectly embodies the opulence prevailing in New York City during the 1980s. Of course, the Trump Tower is just one of the several Trump properties in NYC.
Trump Tower is an imposing 58-story skyscraper in midtown Manhattan which was constructed in 1983. The tower was conceptualized by architect Der Scutt from the firm Swanke, Hayden and Connell. Scutt is the genius behind several skyscrapers in New York City. Trump Tower, however, is his most well-known piece of work.
Trump Tower measures 664 feet or over 200 meters in height. When construction was finished, the Trump Tower was the tallest building across the globe. It is made of reinforced concrete, crop-wall central design. This is the similar architectural design used in Trump World Tower which was finished in 2001. A hat-truss also made of concrete topping the tower links the exterior pillars with the concrete central structure which makes the building stronger to withstand strong winds and earthquakes.
The tower?s fa?ade is just as well-thought-out as its structural foundation. Dark reflective glass cladding was utilized which allows natural light to come in while deflecting heat. The building also features setbacks starting close to the base. The setbacks allow for added corner spaces plus broader vistas of New York.
Trump and architect Scutt faced a challenge in building the tower as New York has regulatory restrictions in building such a tall structure on such a small land. To do this, Trump purchase the ?air rights? to the adjacent Tiffany?s store and built a through-block walkway leading to the nearby IBM Building. Trump called a public space which lessened a few of the strict building codes which was complemented by the nature of the skyscraper as a mixed-use facility.
Trump Tower is most popular for its luxurious atrium which occupies six stories. The most popular attraction here is the lighted cascading waterfall which is found directly opposite the building?s entrance. The atrium?s walls are cladded with pink marble and the extensive use of mirrors and brass is obvious as soon as visitors are greeted by this grand lobby area. The atrium was meant to be a shopping center which boasts of boutiques and specialty stores.
True to its class, Trump Tower is regarded as the realm of New York?s illustrious elite and famous. Donald Trump himself holds residence at the building?s penthouse and a number of New York?s affluent live on the remaining residential spaces. While the building?s residential floors are exclusive, the retail space is open to the general New York public.
