The American Tobacco Trail is an interesting 20-mile trail in North Carolina. It is a part of the East Coast Greenway and a Rails-to-Trails project.
The American Tobacco Trail crosses through the cities of Durham and several counties like Wake, Chatham and Durham. It was once the rail line used by the American Tobacco Company in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The rail line served as a way to connect the processing plants and warehouses all throughout the city of Durham.
When the Jordan Lake reservoir was built in the 1970s by the US Army Corps of Engineers, the tracks needed to be relocated. This eventually led to the conversion of the trail lines to a multi-use trail now known as the American Tobacco Trail that is open to pedestrians, bicycle, and equestrian traffic.
