The Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site was one owned by John Reed. It was a part of his farm, and in 1799, he found a 17-pound gold nugget there. Since he didn?t know that it was a precious material, his family used it as a door stopper until they sold it off. From there, the mining started.

The Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site was once known to produce large, pure nuggets. This, along with its many other firsts, made it possible for it to become a noted place. Today, it is open to the public.
