The Berry Botanic Garden started out as a private garden, owned and tended by Rae Selling Berry in the 1930s. After her death in 1976, the nonprofit organization, Friends of Berry Botanic Garden, bought the property and established the public site that boasts of the largest public rock garden in all of West Coast.

The Berry Botanic Garden is well known for its excellent plant-conservation program and big seed bank. Most efforts of the site were dedicated to protecting rare and endangered plants in the Pacific Northwest. The seed bank is also thought to be the first of its kind that is designed to protect uncommon native plants.

Due to some funding issues, the Berry Botanic Garden is in the process of finding a new owner. In the mean time, its conservation program is being delegated to the Portland State University?s Environmental Science and Management program.
