The Redwood Library and Athenaeum was first established in 1747. It serves as a private subscription library in Newport, Rhode Island and is best known for being the United States? oldest community library that is still using its original structure.
One of the oldest community libraries in the country, the Redwood Library and Athenaeum was designed in the Georgian Palladian style of architecture. It was the first ever classical public building to be built in the United States, making this site really special. Of course, the fact that it has also had one of Brown University?s founder, Ezra Stiles, as one of its librarians, makes it a really historically significant site.
The Redwood Library and Athenaeum was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
