Also known as the New Cooper River Bridge, the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is the longest cable-stayed span in the Western Hemisphere. Opened in 2005, it was built as a replacement to two obsolete cantilever truss bridges. It connects downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant over the Cooper River.

The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is composed of eight lanes that carry bikes and pedestrians over 1546 feet of length. The bridge?s construction history is not a simple one. It took 20 years to raise money to build it, especially since the state resisted for so long into building a new span. Finally, retired US Congressman Arthur Ravenel Jr. stepped up and ran for the South Carolina senate so he can solve the funding problem.
