The Atalaya Castle, also known as the Atalaya, is the winter estate of the founder of The Hispanic Spciety of America, Archer Huntington and his artist wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington. The location was chosen by the couple as it was the right climate for the missus, who suffered from tuberculosis from the 1920s to the 1930s.
The Atalaya Castle is a real vast property with the living quarters having 30 rooms, a studio with an enclosed courtyard, and a couple of pens for animals.
Currently, the Atalaya Castle is a part of the National Historic Landmark listing of the Atalaya and Brookgreen Gardens? site. It is under the care of the Friends of Huntington Beach State Park who offers guided tours of the estate and runs the Atalaya Visitor Center. The site also hosts the annual Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival.
