Through time, the building deteriorated and it was rebuilt by the Volunteer Artillery Company. It has played a great role in numerous wars even the Revolutionary War.

It also served as home to the artillery of the Beaufort Volunteers whose information can be traced back to a company built earlier way back in 1776.
