Beaufort, South Carolina is a very old city. It was incorporated in 1711, allowing it to accumulate a number of antebellum buildings in some of its areas. The most notable, however, is the Beaufort Historic District, which is composed of neighborhoods that are filled with old structures that can give people a glimpse of the beginnings of the area.
The Beaufort Historic District is divided into five neighborhoods. There?s the downtown area, the Point neighborhood, the Bluff area, the Old Commons, and the Northwest Quadrant. All of them are composed of homes from previous centuries; some even go back to the 1700s.
Although, not all of the properties on the area are considered historic, some are officially designated as National Historic Landmarks or are already added on the National Register of Historic Places.
