The Berners Barnwell Sams House No. 2 is a historic home in Beaufort, South Carolina. Its significance was determined by its handsome architecture, which is in the Classic revival style, and by the roles it played in the history of the city.
The Berners Barnwell Sams House No. 2 was built shortly before the Civil War in 1852. It served as a hospital for the Union troops during the war years. Its dependency, which was formerly a cook house, blacksmith shop, laundry, store room, and servants? rooms are turned into an apartment complex. The whole property also served as a St. Helena rectory (which allowed it to house the ?poet of the Confederacy,? Reverend AP Hay) and was owned by George Crofut?s descendants for a time.
