The Camp Saxton Site is a popular tourist destination in Port Royal, South Carolina. It is also historically significant for being an intact portion of the camp that was occupied by the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first black regiment that was transformed into regular US Army service during the Civil War. The group camped on the site from November 1862 to January 1863.
The Camp Saxton Site is also notable for the historic celebration that the regiment held when the announcement for the Emancipation Proclamation happened. The proclamation legally freed all slaves in the areas that are considered to be ?in rebellion? in the country, so the regiment immediately became freed men at that very instant. The site was listed on the National Register in 1995.
