Carver Theatre is a historic building in Columbia, South Carolina. It was built in 1941 to serve as one of the only two movie theatres in the city that was exclusively for African Americans. This fact allowed the site to become a vital element in the local black community during the early to mid twentieth century.
Carver Theatre welcomed blacks who want to get entertained. It played films and also shown live performances like talent shows and plays.
The Carver Theatre is a part of the local Fourth Avenue Historic District which is noted for being the ?black business district? in Columbia. The area was adjacent to the African American neighbourhood in the city. The district and the site are all cited for their historic significance.
