The John Stuart House is a historic building in the city of Charleston, South Carolina. It was built in 1772 for Colonel John Stuart in the Georgian style of architecture.
Colonel John Stuart is a prominent character in the South back in his day. Scottish born, he moved to the state of South Carolina in 1748. He initially earned income by being a merchant and then later on worked as a militia captain for the Anglo-Cherokee War. He was also captured by the Cherokees but was later ransomed. Thanks to these experiences, he became adept with the local affairs, securing his appointment as the superintendent for the Indian Department.
The three story Georgian style house served as his home from its completion and until his death in 1779.
