One of South Carolina?s premiere art museums is the Columbia Museum of Art. It is located in the capital city of Columbia in Richland County, South Carolina.
Opened in 1950, the museum has consistently drawn thousands of visitors. The museum features an extensive collection of American and European visual arts, as well as decorative arts that cover a period of several centuries. Currently, the museum has a Baroque and Renaissance period collection, which was donated by the Samuel Kress Foundation. These paintings are 15th and 16th century works done in Italy, one of the seats of the Renaissance period.
The museum?s collections include paintings of biblical scenes, Madonna and Child paintings, and other religious paintings. There are also paintings by Claude Monet, Asian artifacts, and Chinese porcelain and glass art.
