The Congregation Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim is a historic place of worship in Charleston, South Carolina. It is best known for being the birthplace of the Reform Judaism in the United States. The synagogue was founded in 1740s, making it one of the oldest ones in the country.
In 1824, it became the first congregation to follow the Reform movement that started in Germany. This is why it is known as the birthplace of Reform Judaism.
The building, however, was only constructed in 1840. It is currently the second oldest religious place of the sort in the whole country that is still continuously being used for the building?s initial purpose. With all of its records, it became eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was even declared a National Historic Landmark in 1980.
