The Dubose Heyward House is the well known former dwelling of the author Edwin Dubose Heyward. Best known for his work Porgy, published in 1925, he became a larger figure when the book was turned into an opera titled Porgy and Bess.

Edwin Dubose Heyward is a real Charleston, South Carolina native. He was born in the city in 1885 as a descendant of the United States Declaration of Independence signer, Thomas Heyward, Jr. He grew up in the city, ill most of the time, allowing him to have more time to his literature books and writing.

The Dubose Heyward House was Edwin Dubose Heyward?s home from 1919 to 1924, making the site the place where he penned the popular novel, Porgy.
