Also called the Riverview, the Elizabeth Hext House is one of the oldest homes in Beaufort. It was built in 1720 by Francis Hext, Jr. and Elizabeth Stanyarne Hext. It was named after their daughter and only child, Elizabeth Hext. She married a Barnwell grandson, William Sam, and the property stayed on the family until 1864, when the US Tax Commission sold the house for $640.

The Elizabeth Hext House is known for a number of great things. Aside from being one of the oldest residential structures in the city of Beaufort, South Carolina, it is also seen as the most intimate home from its time. Unlike other antebellum houses, the Riverview was actually quite small. This allowed it to appear more personal.
