The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum opened to the public in June 1997 but was already conceived earlier by a group of visionaries in Myrtle Beach.
The Museum is housed in a building that was built by textile industry mogul Eugene Cannon in 1924. It was sold to Col. Elliot White Springs for his family and executives of Springs Industries. In 1975, the building faced the threat of a demolition, which started a campaign to save it. After a major relocation process, the building was finally moved to its new home.
Today, the Museum is composed of 6 first floor galleries that feature rotating exhibits, four second-floor galleries that include the Grace Martin Matlock Education Galleries, the Art Studio, which is a classroom space used for workshops, the Simeon Chapin Art Resource Library, a Reception Room, and the Carolyn Burroughs Teach Porch.
