Completed in 1924, the Gassaway Mansion is considered to be one of the most unique structures in South Carolina. Its original cost reached $790,000, which had been a huge sum in those days. Commissioned by couple Walter & Minnie Gassaway, the stones used for the mansion?s exterior had been gathered from a mill that was originally owned by Vardy McBee. Materials used for its interior had also been sourced from different areas, which include Tiffany stained glass windows, Italian tiles, and flooring and panelling from New York.

In 1959, the property was purchased by the Greenville Art Association and in the late 1970?s, the property had served as a church school under the management of the Emmanuel Temple. At present, the 22,000 square foot five-story and forty-room property is owned by William & Janette Thompson, where they reside with their daughter, Colleen, and her husband Marc Wheeler.
