The Graniteville Historic District is a historic area in Graniteville, South Carolina. It is the site where the textile industry was introduced to the Southern region, just before the Civil War. The historic site is composed of the Graniteville Canal, which dates back to 1846, the Graniteville Mill built in 1849, 26 workers houses, nine other early housing structures, the St. John?s Methodist Church, and the Graniteville Academy built in 1847.
Most of the buildings in the area were constructed before the Civil War, around the 1840s by William Gregg. It is said that what he built became the model of other cotton mill owners in the region. This is mostly since he built a village that has cheap housing, with free schools, churches, and stores.
