St. Helena is home to the Gullah culture, which is basically the local African American tradition and culture of those who are Lowcountry natives. This is why, in commemoration of the history of the area, the Penn Center holds an annual Heritage Days Celebration in honor of the people?s part in the local history.

The Heritage Days Celebration is composed of a series of events celebrating the unique cultural heritage of the Gullah people. They have a number of public events like the Community Sing, storytelling, dancing, fairs, parade, and other live entertainment. There are also demonstrations and carnival rides for children. An educational symposium is also commonly held.
The Heritage Days Celebration usually takes place every second weekend of November.
