Also known as the Hopsewee-on-the-Santee or the Thomas Lynch, Jr. Birthplace, the Hopsewee Plantation is a historic site in Georgetown, South Carolina. It was built in 1749 and became the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., a Declaration of Independence signer. It also initially served as a low county rice plantation upon completion.
Despite being more than two hundred years old, the Hopsewee Plantation only passed on to four different owners. Currently, it functions primarily as a private residence, but it is also open to the public. Its current owners cherish and celebrate the property?s historic past, allowing people to tour the house that is furnished with 18th and 19th century furniture pieces. It is also available to be rented for private events and gatherings.
