Built in 1803 in Charleston, South Carolina is the historic Joseph Manigault House. The property was originally owned by Joseph Manigault, a wealthy plantation owner, state legislator, and College of Charleston trustee. It was designed for him by his brother, Gabriel Manigault, a Europe-educated architect.
Currently functioning as a historic house museum that is owned and operated by the Charleston Museum, the Joseph Manigault House features and reflects how life in a rice-plantation in the 1800s was life. It shows the lifestyles of both the plantation owners and their slaves to help visitors better capture the whole picture.
When the Joseph Manigault House was threatened to be demolished in the 1920s, it pushed the locals to save it. This gave way to the birth of the Preservation Society of Charleston.
