Also known as the Medway Plantation, Medway is a historic site in Goose Creek, South Carolina. It is definitely historically significant as it is the oldest recorded extant house in the state of South Carolina being built around 1686 by Jan Van Arrsens, the leader of the settler group from Holland who moved to the province of Carolina in 1686. He built the house probably the same year.
The Medway got its name from its location. As it was built by the Back River, then called ?Meadway? or ?Medway?, the house soon enough adopted the name. It was then passed on to various owners as years passed. It became the home of many prominent figures like Theodore Samuel Marion, nephew to Francis Marion, Theodore Samuel Dubose, Peter Gaillard Stoney, and socialite Gertrude Sanford Legendre.
