The Moorlands is another historic structure in the beautiful city of Beaufort, South Carolina. The current house, built after the Civil War, is not exactly the first building to rise on the site. According to one sketch by the artist John Campbell, there was an original house in the area back in 1798. However, like many buildings of the time, there are no documents that could prove such claim.
In any case, history tells that the property was owned by John Bell I and Robert Barnwell at different occasions. Both men have served the Beaufort community well, contributing much to the economy, history, and culture in different means.
Today?s Moorlands building is built on the original foundation of the older structure destroyed by a fire in the 1890s.
