Built in 1882, the Newberry Opera House is a historic theatre in Newberry, South Carolina. It is the regular venue of performances by the South Carolina Opera Company and Asheville Lyric Opera.
The Newberry Opera House was originally intended to house public offices and entertainment venues at the same time. Its original design allocated areas for a fire engine room, three jail cells, a clerk?s office, council chambers, and a police station on its first floor. The second story was designated to house a 426-seater hall with a ticket room, dressing rooms, and a green room.
From its completion, it housed live entertainment shows. It has also shown silent films and then early ?talkies?. This allowed it to earn the title as the ?entertainment center of the Midlands?. It was listed on the National Register in 1969.
