He was nicknamed as the ?Great Secessionist? for his great contributions to the state of South Carolina?s Ordinance of Secession which was passed in 1860. He was initially elected as a US Senator, but he resigned the post and was later elected as a Confederate
Congressman.
His property, the Robert Barnwell Rhett House was declared as a National Historic Landmark in 1973.
