The Robert Smalls House is an exceptionally historic structure in the Beaufort Historic District in Beaufort, South Carolina. It is particularly notable for being the post-Civil War home of Robert Smalls, an African American slave turned Union hero.
Robert Smalls may have been a slave once but he surely made a bigger name for himself by accomplishing outstanding feats while serving the army. He commandeered a Confederate ship to Union blockaders which helped achieve great leaps for the Union troops. After his stint with the military, he became a US Congressman.
The Robert Smalls House, however, was built in 1839. Aside from its relationship with Smalls, there is not much to it, especially since there are not a lot of records about its construction.
