Snow's Island may sound like a winter wonderland, but it is surely no place for sleigh bells. For history buffs interested in chronicled wars, the place is dreams come true.
Located in Johnsonville, South Carolina, Snow's Island served as a headquarters for General Francis Marrion's forces. It also functioned as a supply depot and a retreat in 1780-1781. The general, a militia officer who earned the title ?Swamp Fox? because of his guerilla war tactics and fox-like evasiveness, was one of the three generals who are significant to the effort in defeating the British soldiers stationed in the South. Snow's Island strategic positioning afforded General Marrion's men the perfect opportunity to raid British outposts and launch heavy assaults upon the Georgetown garrison. However, these attacks made it clear that to get the better of General Marrion's forces; the British must destroy Snow's Island. After the onslaught by the British, General Marrion never used Snow's Island ever again.
Snow's Island remains to be one of South Carolina's national historical landmarks until today.
