The St. James Church is a historic religious site in Goose Creek, South Carolina. It was built around 1708 to 1719, making it one of the first real Georgian churches in the English colonies all over the country. It may be a bit modest with its single story, rectangular shape, but it has an elaborate interior. It is also considered as one of the finest among all the small 18th century countryside parishes in the United States.
Dubbed as one of the earliest Georgian style churches in the colonies, the St. James Church was built by planters from Barbados who settled in the area. It is said that one secret to the building?s longevity is the fact that it was saved by British troops because the structure bears the Royal arms over its chancel. It was also the site of the historic event in 1781 when Wade Hampton attacked the church and did a raid while a service was ongoing where he held the parishioners prisoners.
