Listed as another historic site in Beaufort, South Carolina, the Tabernacle Baptist Church is an old religious building located in 907 Craven Street. It was built in 1840 and was later remodeled in 1893.
Initially considered as a meeting house and lecture room, the Tabernacle Baptist Church was established in the mid 1800s by the Beaufort Baptist Church. It was composed by an African-American congregation. It was damaged in 1893 by a hurricane, but was immediately restored and renovated.
The Tabernacle Baptist Church also has a cemetery in its lot. The noted local, politician, and Union hero Robert Smalls was buried here, where a monument was also erected to commemorate his achievements.
The Tabernacle Baptist Church continues to serve as a religious site until today.
