The Thomas Hepworth House is best known as the oldest house in Beaufort. It was believed to have been constructed in 171, after its original owner, Thomas Hepworth, the colony?s Chief Justice, acquired the land grant of the property that year. The grant had a stipulation that a house should be built on the land in five years, so it is just normal that people expect the house to have been constructed immediately after.
However, some evidences suggest that the Thomas Hepworth House was built around the 1760s, something that will make the house lose its current identifier. Some argue, however, that it could have only been rebuilt around the mid 1700s, and was still originally built around the 1720s.
