The USS Laffey is an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer. It is the second US Navy ship to have been named after Bartlett Laffey, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his services during the Civil War. As to what seems fitting to the great stand of Seaman Laffey, the ship was dubbed as ?The Ship that Would Not Die?, after its D-Day invasion and battle of Okinawa exploits.

Launched in 1943 and commissioned in 1944 under the leadership of Commander F. Julian Becton, the USS Laffey served the United States well during the Second World War, the Korean War, and the Cold War.

The USS Laffey was decommissioned in 1975. It was then given to the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. However, due to the leaks found in its hull, some major restoration is needed to keep it alive. Efforts have begun to do such, however.
