The Voorhees College Historic District is a historically significant area in Denmark, South Carolina, mostly for the Voorhees College. This educational institution really made a mark, not only locally, but also nationally.
Built in the late 19th century, the Voorhees College was established by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright to provide higher education to the underserved black children in a rural setting. It was originally known as the Denmark Industrial School, modelled after the Tuskegee Institute. From being a regular school, it soon matured to being a normal school then to a four-year accredited college.
The Voorhees College Historic District features 13 contributing properties including the Booker T. Washington Hall, St. Philip?s Episcopal Chapel, Bedford Hall, Blanton Hall, and the grave site of Elizabeth Evelyn Wright.
