Despite being built in 1874, the Washington Street United Methodist Church building in Columbia, South Carolina is still considered as one of the oldest churches in the city. This is mostly because the congregation that uses the structure was founded in 1803, and its first church was finished in 1804 at the same site where the current building stands.
The Washington Street United Methodist Church?s 1804 wooden building is also considered as the first church building to be built in Columbia. This allowed the congregation to claim that it is the oldest running congregation in the city as well.
The Washington Street United Methodist Church is still used as a worship place until today. It was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
