Originally cultivated as a private garden by Henry B. Wells, Sr. and son W. Fulmer Wells, the Wells Japanese Garden is a small garden in Newberry, South Carolina. The garden was designed, landscaped, and cared for by the Wells until they have decided to donate it to the city in 1971.
The Wells Japanese Garden features a series of beautiful areas like a teahouse, Japanese style concrete bridges over the ponds, a torii, and a temple. It is also filled with a combination of exotic and indigenous flora like Japanese iris, lotus, water lilies, cypress, dogwood, and crepe myrtle.
Currently known as a popular local landmark in the Newberry area, the Wells Japanese Garden is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of 1980.
