Also known as the Woodland Ruins, the Woodlands is the former home and estate of William Gilmore Simms in Bamberg, South Carolina. Simms was a poet, novelist, and historian from the South.
Simms acquired the Woodlands from marrying into the family who owned the property. When he moved in, the estate was already in great disrepair. He did quite a good work in trying to restore it. Once it was significantly repaired, he managed to host parties and gatherings there, allowing various literary visitors to have a glimpse of a Southern experience.
The Woodlands is dubbed by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History as a significant literary landmark. The site was proclaimed a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
