Housed in the former Penn School, the York W. Bailey Museum was established in 1971 to interpret the history of the Penn, which is best known as one of the first schools in the US created for freed slaves. It was also designed to share and propagate the cultural legacy of the entire Sea Islands.
The York W. Bailey Museum has one permanent exhibition titled, ?Education for Freedom?. It is about the story of the Penn School. Other exhibits and displays are changed every six to eight weeks.
Although, the Penn Center and other neighboring facilities like the York W. Bailey Museum already sees up to 10,000 visitors yearly, it is estimated that more tourists will be attracted in the future when the Gullah-Geechee Heritage Act passes.
