The Devil?s Gulch is a ravine in Garretson, South Dakota, believed to be jumped by the infamous outlaw, Jesse James, to avoid capture while being pursued by local law enforcers. Historians do not believe the lore, as the gap was impossible to overcome, being half a mile or 20 feet long, especially while on a beat farm horse. However, the impossibility makes the whole idea more appealing, thus the creation of the site in memory of the event.
Today, there?s a foot bridge built over this gap, where people can marvel at the feat Jesse James has achieved. Under the bridge is the Bottomless Pit, as it is found to be deeper than 600 feet, when a plumb line that long was lowered and found not to hit the bottom.
Devil?s Guilch is now a park with a number of natural features that people would surely enjoy.
