Also called as the Long Island of the Holston, Long Island in Tennessee was a sacred site for the Cherokee people. It was a council and treaty location for the Native Americans. Some historians believe that the name of the state came from this very place, derived from the Yuchi Indian word ?Tana-see? which means ?The Meeting Place?.
Long Island was declared as a National Historic Landmark in 1960. However, due to the widespread development in the area, the integrity of the site has been questioned, thus causing the recommendation for withdrawal of the NHL status in 1966.
Today, there?s a local Park in half of what the original Long Island was. Half of which is filled with a couple of houses and a waste treatment plant.
