It is not unknown to many that the Grand Canyon in Arizona is the largest in the United States. But, did you know that the second largest canyon in America is found in Texas? That?s right! The Palo Duro Canyon is believed to have been discovered by Spanish explorers, it was named after the Spanish word for ?hardwood? because of the abundance of juniper and mesquite trees in the area.

Palo Duro Canyon is estimated to be 20 miles wide, 120 miles long and 800 feet deep. Now known as the Palo Duro State Park and sometimes called the ?Grand Canyon of Texas?, it was opened to the public in the 4th of July, 1934. It boasts of its massive size and magnificent geographical features that are similar to that of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It is also famous for the Lighthouse Peak trail which is a 6-mile loop that goes out-and-out of the Canyon.
