To oversee the construction of the Utah State Capitol, the Capital Commission was created in 1911. During this time, most efforts were geared toward finding the perfect location for the building. The Capitol Hill where it stands has been referred to as the People House because it serves as a venue for American democracy.
Although some difficulties occurred in financing the original design of the structure, the central elements in this design are being present in its renovated state.
It sits on top of a hill where it overlooks downtown Salt Lake City. Even from its front steps, a magnificent view of Oquirrh Mountains, Wasatch and Salt Lake City can already be seen. Considered to be a marvelous architectural masterpiece, it has sculpted lawns, flowerbeds, trees, and shrubs blossoming over the 40 acres of land it sits on.
