The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library is being administered by the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. It is listed in the the National Register of Historic Places. The museum and library is believed to have the largest collection of artifacts, documents and memorabilia associated to the fifth president of the United States.

The building has three parts and was built at different times. The expansion began at 1816 when the collections grew larger and the three buildings were combined into just one facility. Before the building became a museum the little brick building was used by James Monroe as law office. Years after, the building was used especially used by Monroe descendants as a place for their own personal collections. The building also housed storehouses, restaurants, a schoolhouse and was even used as a tenement housing for freed and escaped slaves during the Civil War. The museum hosts a varied collection of James Monroe?s personal library of recreational books and other rare books associated to his life, family and career.
