The Expedition Island has been recognized as a National Historic Site for it was the starting point used by two expeditions led by Major John WesleyPowell. The first one was the expedition down the Green River in 1869. The second is the expedition from the Colorado River in 1871.
On November 24, 1968, Expedition Island became a National Historic Landmark.
Currently, it allows visitors to see, stroll, and encircle the island. Evening walks are also encouraged as the pathways are lighted for safety and convenience. Picnic tables and shelters are also available to visitors who want a relaxing time. Other features include the playground equipment and access to the Green Belt Nature Walk. The island has also hosted events like Art on the Green, the River Festival, and Flaming Gorge Days, which has been ongoing for several years now.
