pronunciation question

I watched part of one of the 2015 Democratic candidates' debate and have a somewhat silly question.
I've always pronounced the name as "MUS-lim" like you would the cloth muslin (MUS-lin). In fact, the two names have the same origin.
But the candidates kept saying "MOOZ-lim". Have I been saying the name wrong all these years?
Please note: This is NOT, I repeat, NOT, a political question. It's a grammar question! How do you pronounce the term?

Dictionary says [ˈməzləm, ˈmo͝ozləm

I have always pronounced it like the cloth.
