I find working with wood very relaxing. A few winter projects eats up time in a fun way. I found the whale as a raw piece of driftwood in a neighbor widow's garage sale. Her husband decided to move his garaged boat by himself but the boat crushed his skull.

When I saw the driftwood I also saw what he had seen so I finished it for him.

Nice collection. Are some of those Japanese?

Never cut myself carving. I did drill into a fingertip down to the first bend once.

I'd like to pick up a Foredon tool some time and try it on detail work.

Those are just a few Henry Taylor gouges.
Excellent quality at a reasonable price if I say so myself.
I have a few excellent Japanese implements as well.
Lee Valley Tools is one of my favorite places in the world.

video is beyond my bandwidth but I've watched a chainsaw wood carver at a local art show. Till then I thought a chainsaw too cumbersome for fine work but he was using a small electric chainsaw. I had a chance to use that kind of saw two winters back and it would be a fine carving tool. Save the gas for a maple.
