It's well worth driving the length of Hwy 11, which runs along the base of the mountains, from Gaffney down to the GA border. Places along that corridor include a covered bridge, Poinsett Bridge, Jones Gap, Simm's Chapel. and numerous waterfalls. As you go south, there are several trout streams, and 3 large lakes. North of 11 in Landrum there are a lot of antique stores.

Downtown Greenville is awesome. They have a beautiful park area, near the Reedy River falls with lots of restaurants and fun activities to do. They also have a wide open outdoor area, where food festivals and live music can often be found.

Something I did one day just for fun was to drive up to Lancaster County and follow a map to Revolutionary War sites of interest. There is a LOT on interesting history from that period in South Carolina if you are into that kind of thing. It is a nice (and inexpensive) way to learn something, have fun and get some exercise. )

Stumphouse Tunnel in Walhalla is a nice day trip as well. It's basically just a huge manmade tunnel that was cut for railroad tracks but was never finished.

I line near Greenville, and it has a great downtown for you to visit. Also nearby, is Helen, GA which is a great little town in the mountains with a swiss/german flair. many scenic towns in line with that as well.
