I've been considering taking the family out to HF for a camping/wheeling weekend. Would it be considered a family friendly destination?

Yes, it is. People go camping all the time. The ranch is broken up into parts. 4x4's, atvs and cycles and camping.

4x4 trails in Austin?
Most of the places have been mentioned by others. You might also google "Austin Jeep Exclusive." It's a local club that meets monthly and does fairly regular offroad trips in the area.

HF is very family friendly. My 5 yr old son and I went out there a few weeks ago to off-road. We had a blast, here's a pic of where we stopped to eat lunch, you can see my Jeep way in the back.
Cheers,
John
